Video Intercoms

Whilst video intercoms have been around for many years, technological advances and more affordable options entering the market have made these once elite-only devices accessible to a wider audience. Video intercoms were originally used in large apartment complexes and multi-million-dollar mansions but nowadays you will find them in even the most modest of homes.

These crafty gadgets provide an added level protection and reassurance for you and your home. If you have been toying with the idea of investing in one, here are a few more reasons to seal the deal and ditch annoying door-knocking forever!

1. Who is it?

The ability to identify who is at your door before having to open it eliminates risk to yourself and to your family. Electronic operation, live video and recording capabilities are just a few of the features that have increased the convenience and desirability of video intercoms in the modern-day home. Systems available range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, depending on features and quality. There are a couple of options when it comes to the type of system:

Basic WIFI capable/battery operated door intercom: There are a number of these modules available on the market today (RING, ARLO just to name two brands). These are a great entry level product which will provide basic live video surveillance of your door. Disclaimer, battery and WIFI can often prove unreliable. If you have extra to spend, we would always recommend a hardwired option!

Hardwired video intercom: Where budget allows, we always recommend a hardwired video intercom module. Wireless connectivity found in the cheaper, entry level options can often be inconsistent, resulting in lapse in surveillance. Hardwired and IP intercom systems have reliable connections (either hardwired to home router OR through system storage).

Video intercom with access control: Intercoms with integrated access control allow you to unlock the gate or door to your home electronically. An electronic latch is attached to the point of entry and can be opened using a code, a tag or remotely from your smart device. These are great for superior protection and if you often have people coming and going from your home.

2. Not home? No Worries!

One of the primary benefits of video intercom is the ability to see who’s at the door, even if you are not home. Most video intercom systems will allow you to connect video, audio and access control via your smart device from any location. The ability to be able to ‘answer’ the door while you’re at work or away on holidays adds an extra layer of protection to your home. Modern video intercoms can be integrated with existing home security systems, so if you already have security cameras around your home, you can connect and view these remotely as well.

In addition to preventing undesirables from accessing your home, remote viewing can also assist with:

  • Package deliveries
  • Tradies and service people

3. Not available right now!

The ability to see and speak to whoever is at your door not only protects your families’ safety…but also their sanity! We have all experienced the feeling of having to answer the door to someone who we did not particularly want to converse with. Screening your potential guests (whether that be pesky in-laws or overbearing friends!) is just another advantage to installing one of these clever systems.
